Biography
Becky Potter is a theatre artist located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Passionate about theatre from an early age, Becky has worked as a director, educator, dramaturg, and actor.
Becky’s professional theatrical career began at the Willows Theatre Company in Concord where she began as a young performer and worked for over a decade there as an actor, stage technician, spotlight operator, Cubase operator and conductor, Associate Director of Youth Programs, Company Manager, and SummerStage Junior director.
As an undergraduate Becky studied theatre at UC Irvine studying acting, musical theatre, directing, and playwriting. Highlights of her time at UCI included participation in the Musical Theatre New York Satellite Program and serving as an ArtsBridge Scholar, teaching dance and theatre to elementary school students in local schools. Becky graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BA in Drama in 2006.
Continuing to work in the Bay Area Becky pursued her Master’s Degree at San Francisco State University. Studying play crafting, dramaturgy, and directing, Becky focused her research based writing on topics in musical theatre. Becky’s thesis, exploring the work of composer Trude Rittmann, earned her the Graduate Student Award for Distinguished Achievement in 2010.
After completing her Master’s Degree Becky found a home teaching middle and high school theatre at Oakland School for the Arts from 2010-2020. At OSA Becky taught classes in acting, musical theatre history and performance, dramaturgy, voice and movement, women playwrights, and documentary theatre. While on the faculty at OSA Becky directed small and large cast plays as well co-directing four all school musicals.
Since 2007 Becky has also called B8 Theatre Company (formerly Butterfield 8 Theatre Company) one of her primary creative homes and now serves as an Artistic Associate for the company. At B8 Becky performed in over a dozen Shakespeare, Shaw and Wilde plays as well as two world premieres (including playing Elizabeth Bennett in B8’s two part production of Donald Hardy’s adaptation of Pride and Prejudice). Becky has also served as a dramaturg, musical director, and director for B8 most recently directing the world premiere production of Jacquelyn Priskorn’s Andela.
Becky’s most recent musical theatre projects have been focused on revising golden age musicals for a modern audience. At 42nd St. Moon Becky helmed The Pajama Game and Mame both musicals that were given fresh treatments to maintain the heart and spirit of the pieces while revising dated elements to give these classic scores fresh life.
Becky lives in Walnut Creek with her husband, two daughters and small white dog.
